Why Live Streaming Council Meetings Matters

One of the highlights of my time on St. Paul Town Council has been championing the live streaming of council meetings. This was a tangible goal I set for myself eight years ago, when I first joined council, because I firmly believe that open and accessible government strengthens our community.

Not everyone has the time—or comfort level—to sit in the gallery during a council meeting. For some residents, especially in a smaller town, just showing up in person can raise eyebrows: “Why are you here?”  Live streaming is great for thouse who whant to stay informend of the work of council is doing without the feeling of a spotlight on them.

Live streaming allows anyone—residents, community groups, or even municipal staff—to follow council’s decisions and understand how those decisions were made, without having to be physically present. It offers flexibility for busy families, too. Parents who are putting kids to bed or cheering at hockey practice during meeting times can still catch up later by watching the recording, even skipping through the less exciting parts if they choose.

Of course, streaming isn’t without its challenges. Putting council meetings online creates a permanent record, which means comments can be replayed, scrutinized, and sometimes criticized. I’ve had moments where I regretted something I said, and I was rightfully called out. But accountability is part of public service, and I believe that being held responsible for my words has made me a better councillor.

The live stream has also helped create more transparency. Whether or not the camera is rolling, I’ve always tried to conduct myself the same way—honest, direct, and respectful. That’s the standard I believe residents deserve.

Looking ahead, I hope that our next council—and every council after—continues this practice. Live streaming ensures that local government is accessible, accountable, and relevant to the people it serves. It makes it easier for residents to be engaged in the decisions that shape our community, on their own time and in their own way.

Transparency builds trust, and live streaming council meetings is one way to make sure that trust continues to grow.
